Adbusters magazine spearheaded the #Occupy Wallstreet and worldwide Occupy movement, including Occupy London Stock Exchange (LSX). The international Occupy groups are protesting against the banks and corporate greed bringing about the current global economic meltdown.

The banks were bailed out by the governments with taxpayers’ money, then severe cuts to public spending were made and taxes increased for the poor- while the corporations and super-rich dodge paying their taxes. Austerity measures ensued and continue, with the poor increasingly frustrated, the fabric of society slowly ripping apart.

The UK riots and looting seen as part of an inarticulate and violent backlash from a disaffected youth; the Occupy Movement aims to be the thinking person’s civil disobedience and fight for justice – a kind of ripple effect from the Arab Spring’s call for democracy.

Those in the ‘Western world’ are calling for true democracy and against punishing ordinary citizens – when it is the banks who caused this global recession. It’s estimated that 1% of the world’s population (the financial elite) own 40 % of the total world’s wealth. Intelligent and angry about being unable to build a decent living they have worked hard for, the common people are demanding change. The Occupy movement’s slogan is “We are the 99 %.”
